I agree: Hetz sucks. I also think Progress Energy sucks.

Love the blog. Keep up the fight. Sooner or later, Fortune 500 companies will need to learn to act small and listen to individuals.

Today was the first and last time I will ever rent from Hertz. I have never experienced such rude service in my entire life, first from the front desk clerk, so I asked to speak to the manager who was even worse!!

This happened at the Albuquerque, NM airport Hertz office. I called the National Office to report the poor service, where they informed me that they had no control over local offices. WHAT??

As I said, this is the first and last time I will ever deal with Hertz. This was a $500 learning experience for me. (They originally quoted me and reserved the car for $175.) Please do not put yourself through the same experience I had today - DO NOT RENT FROM HERTZ.

I am a Hertz Number #1 Club Gold Member, and I rent from Hertz about once a week. Here is why Hertz SUCKS: Their "frequent renter" program is a total JOKE. It takes TONS of rentals to earn anything worthwhile, and then they send you a paper certificate. If you earn a free rental day, you must track and keep hold of that certificate, or it is just TOO BAD for you. There is NO RECORD of your awards at Hertz, and I suspect they do it that way on purpose. Why can't they be like Southwest Airlines or Starwood Hotels, two first class affinity programs? I have enough to keep track of already, and maintaning a file for Hertz awards is probably not going to happpen. It is paradoxical--the reason I am a good Hertz customer is because I am BUSY. So why would they give me more to worry about?? Until Hertz fixes this, they will SUCK. I am stuck with them for corporate reasons, but others should run away from Hertz!

Management Trainee--worst job of my life! Hertz promised to pay me $30,000 a year SALARY (next thing I knew I was punching a time clock) and that I should expect $6,000 in bonuses. Although I consistently have some of the top Management Trainee sales numbers in the New York City region, I mysteriously made $17,000 dollars last year.

Furthermore, I pay to work here. I had to take my own personal car to training at lovely JFK airport as well as pay for my own gas and tolls. Isn't this a rental car company? I was promised to get reimbursed. That training was a YEAR ago. I still never got any reimbursement money from the company.

On top of that, I am constantly criticized by management for every little thing I do. I think my breathing annoys them. My only saving grace is that the customers think I am a sweet, positive, lovely young lady, and if I didn't hear that from them, I would think that I am a waste of blood and bones as far as the comments from management goes.

Oh, by the way, do not work for Hertz if you have a disability. Against all Department of Labor Laws, they will grill you and ask you what type of disability you have, force you to talk to executives in the company concerning specific details of the nature of your disability, tell other people all of that confidential information that they FORCED you to talk about, and deny you promotions based on your disability. I have left work many days in tears.

Needless to say, I am looking for another job--preferably in a place that treats me with even the smallest level of human dignity.

Three days wait for a suitable car to drive to my temporary workplace in Namibia on the dirt roads. They palmed me off initially with a minuscule car not big enough for me, my colleague, and our luggage. On the second day, the airport office kept me waiting four hours telling me that the replacement car was arriving from their city office to my hotel. It never arrived (and the city office said that it was never sent).
Had to leave my colleague in town and drive to the work site alone.
They did bring the replacement car to the site on the third day, with my colleague, but wouldn't pay his hotel bill.

I worked for Hertz for many years.
I know that employee moral is low.
And I had personal animosity toward them for many things.
But, all, in all, they were a good company to work for, if you did it their way.
And that is what one gets paid for, I suppose.
I am also handicapped, and was never made to feel like that mattered.
I worked for the call center, and had varied training, in different areas.
My personal opinion, Hertz is a lot better in the way they deal with the customer, and the employees than any of the call centers across the US.
If an employee or a customer got a raw deal, it might have been an isolated incident, or even that that employee or customer was not an easy please in the first place.

I dont say Hertz is perfect, but I do say they were one of the best, until they outsourced to Georgia.

I work for hertz...it sucks. They treat their non-managemnt employees like crap and upper management treats lower management like crap. So basically everyone gets treated like crap. I work at a San Diego location and it sucks. They keep inventory low on purpose and then they'll over hire then lay people off. Then we get short staff and they'll over hire again. Pair that all up with irrate and dissatidfied customers who chew you out for things you can't control and honestly not responsible for (ie low fleet inventory, wait times, delayed flights etc.) and you get a very crappy environment. Also add that to the "sales tactics" that we are to used and those "top performers" who use those particular tactics and you start to think to yourself where are the ethics and it comes down to that there is none. Just dollar signs. I've been there for almost a year now and you probably ask why are you still there. Me too. Got bills to pay and mouths to feed. In anycase I sympathise with customers and employees alike. Some do there jobs properly and well and then there are those that don't. But all in all working at Hertz has sucked from day one. Just another number on a line on a financial stat sheet.

I got you all beat. I am a new hire at Hertz. My 3rd week on the job and I heard a Assistant store manager say that his family was sitting on the roofs of the northern New Orleans homes with guns just waiting. When asked "were they waiting for burglars?" He Replied, "burglars, blacks what ever you want to call them." I told him he pissed me off because my fiancee is part African American." He than challenged me to fight."
I reported him and guess what his punishment was? A simple write up.
outrageous. I hope you tell everyone you know how shitty they are. DO NOT RENT FROM HERTZ.

A soon to be former HERTZ employee

I think I can just about beat you all for how bad Hertz sucks, and how badly they screwed me over, cheated me, and stole from me.
Hertz nearly got me thrown out of my hotel... on my HONEYMOON.
Here's how it happened: We were in amsterdam for 8 days. after four days, we arranged through the hotel to rent a car to take to Germany for a day and night, to return the following day, when we would check into a new hotel.
We were referred to Hertz, although I have always had good experiences with Enterprise.
At the rental location, we waited 45 minutes to get the smallest, ugliest lime-green car ever.
We declined insurance. We also were asked by the salesman if we would both like to drive. He did not say they would be charging us an extra $50 for that privilege, or we would have declined.
We explained we would be driving to Germany, so the salesman gave us a rental plan that charged by the mile. This cost us more than $100 extra.
The rental itself was pricey.... about $100 for one day in a sub-compact. But we headed to Germany.

When we returned 23 hours later, the store was CLOSED. So we went to our hotel to check in, drop our bags, and determine a new drop-off location.
At the hotel, our credit card was declined because Hertz had charged us more than $400 for ONE DAY IN A SUB-COMPACT. We had carefully planned our expenses, and this was not one of them.
I had to drive to the airport, where at 25 hours I was told I would be charged for TWO DAYS. I explained that the pickup location had closed without ever telling me I would not be able to return the car, which i clearly rented for ONE DAY. I mean, can you tell me I won't be able to return it at the same place?
I told the manager at the counter that we were being rejected by our hotel and would be put on the street... during our honeymoon. his response? "That's your problem."
So Hertz charged us about $450 for this one day in a tiny car. They did it by lying and deceiving about our rental plan, driver charges, mileage charges, adding insurance, and failing to inform me of return availability.
Only by getting a credit extension from American Express were we able to avoid being without shelter on our honeymoon.
Fuck Hertz. Some day I am going to rent a car from them, get their insurance, and total the car and blow up the engine.

I just recently dealt with Hurtz (spelling intentional). They Are the worst...customer service, all of them.

If you try to reserve a car at a price, they "run out" of that car and charge you more.

They also throw on tons of miscellaneous charges and jack up the price.

I will never use them again.

So I traveled to Raleigh a few weeks ago and felt like cattle herded on the bus, standing in long lines waiting to get a car, and then dealing with the no personality drone at the desk. I have always used hertz so that seemed normal to me. When I returned the car, I needed to go inside to switch the credit card used to charge the car, but it was kind of difficult because of all the cattle (people) waiting for a bus. When I was in there a customer who was obviously concerned about how long the bus was taking and worried about getting to his flight was asking if the bus was ever coming and made a reference about it being 10 minutes since they told him it would only be 5 minutes. And one of the drones actually started arguing with the customer about how long it had been. I was thinking like WTF ??? Hertz was screwing up and they were arguing with customers? THEY ROCKED. No lines, pleasant employees who gave me a bottle of water. I was like WTF -- I have been dealing with Hertz for years and never had such an great experience as I had with Enterprise. Needless to say -- buh bye Hertz.

I rented a car from Hertz over the weekend. Actually, I travel for business around 45 weeks out of the year, and we use Hertz exclusively. Therefore, I have plenty of Hertz points built up. I was visiting friends in LA, and decided to use a bunch of my points to rent a Corvette for the weekend. This covered all of the rental except for the taxes, and when I returned the car they printed he receipt out showing that my charge would be $10 on my VISA debit card.

I logged into my bank Monday morning to balance my account, and imagine my astonishment at seeing a $629 charge from Hertz! Even without the bonus points the charge would have only been $340 (it shows the amount before the bonus points on the receipt). I immediately called Hertz, and after a 16 minute hold time (which was pissing me off more), a rude and obnoxious "customer service" lady told me that "Hertz policy" was to charge my card the price of the rental and $200 more, and that this would be returned to my account "in 24 to 48 hours".

This is beyond belief that they would not only give a receipt for $10 charged to you, but to then charge you the full amount and another $200 on top of it for "Hertz policy" is so far past my boiling point I cannot put it into words. The "customer dis-service" person could not (or would not) explain why, since the rental was technically $340 without the points certificate, that they charged $300 more (instead of their "policy" of $200) on my card.

The policy on their website about using a debit card with the VISA logo (which is what I use)

“At most Hertz locations, debit cards (sometimes called check cards) issued under a VISA or Mastercard logo which draw funds directly from the cardholder's account may be used to qualify for rental. However, prepaid or stored value cards which have a VISA or Mastercard logo are not accepted to qualify for rental. Debit cards must have available funds for the estimated amount of the rental charges plus up to $200 to cover any incidental charges in order to secure the rental. Both debit cards and prepaid or stored value cards issued under a VISA or Mastercard logo may be used as a form of payment when you return the vehicle. Please contact your local Hertz Reservations Office if you have a question about whether Hertz will accept a certain card”

There is ZERO mention that they will charge you the fee’s plus their “up to $200” in advance, and that they will take up to 48 hours (per their phone person) to reverse the charge. Technically, I watched my account reach a negative amount before they corrected the issue. I remain angry beyond description.

As a side note, I sent this complaint in on Monday when this happened, and also sent the email to both the CEO and the President of the Board of Directors, but have never received a reply, an apology, or a phone call (and I sent all my contact info to them)

On the receipt they ask you to complete a "feedback survey". Enclosed is my letter to them, and I do plan to follow thru on my complaints to every agency I can find. In fact, I would welcome any suggestions on who to complain to.

--------------------------

I am outraged and appalled over the billing issue that has occurred on my rental. I have a receipt in my possession that shows a charge on my credit card of $10 for my rental. However, I am showing a $629 charge on my bank from Hertz. This rental was done using my Hertz points, and this charge is NOT appropriate.

Furthermore, when I contacted customer service I was told that "Hertz Policy" is to place a "hold" of over $200 over the estimated charge of the rental for at least 28 hours. I had a points reservation and a receipt that shows a charge of $10 from when I turned in this car, and your policy of putting a pending charge of $629 is not proper, nor was it spelled out in any of the rental agreements or contracts that I signed. You gave no advance notice of this sort of "policy" that would place a $629 charge on my bank account when the total price of the rental was $10, and then to have a VERY rude person in customer service tell me that the charge would be refunded "within 28 hours". The total price of the weekend rental was $340 without the gift certificate, and for you to add another $300 in addition for some sort of hold policy has angered me beyond belief.

As a side note, the person who answered my phone call was both rude and not helpful. She was abrasive during the call, repeatedly telling me that she was "explaining Hertz policy to me". I do not appreciate being talked down to. To be honest, the policy is wrong, especially when you consider that there is no advance notice of this policy during the rental process or in the contract that was given me at the time of the rental. For you to charge double the price of the rental with MY money is totally unacceptable.

I was already upset over this rental because they did not have the car I reserved. Over a month ago I had reserved a Corvette using my Hertz points, but when I arrived the car was not available. The lady at the counter was nice, but she could not advise why the Corvette could not be found. I was frankly amazed that a company such as Hertz could lose track of a Corvette, but the bottom line is that my weekend was a disappointment because the one time in my life that I would rent a car like this was destroyed because they could not find a car that was rented in advance. In addition, the insult was magnified when she called for three different managers to come to the Gold counter to assist with this, and not one of them showed up nor apologized for the error.

I will be contacting very local, state, and federal agency that I can, in addition to the Better Business Bureau, to file formal complaints on this policy of charging such a preposterous amount as some sort of "hold" when you are giving a receipt that shows a different amount. There are a number of consumer complaint websites that I plan to post this on as a complaint. Furthermore, my office and my corporate office has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in rentals from Hertz over the years, and I plan on informing the CEO and owners of both companies of what has occurred with this situation.

Your prompt attention and reply to this matter is expected.

I've never seen such a bunch of whiners in my life. "Wah, I want everything free, wah. I don't want to work, wah. Mommy, feed me, change my diapers, wah"! Get a life people! Spoiled, entitled geeks like this group, are part of the reason are economy sucks, and we are off shoring jobs. General populations in most other countries know how to work, and appreciate what they have. Instead of crying for more, like a bunch of babies. Perhaps if your parents hadn't spoon fed you everything from video games to college tuitions, you might have picked up a little work ethic along the way. Without 90 year old Fortune 500 companies like Hertz, where would we be now? Jobless? They helped build this country to greatness. Show some respect. I'd like to see any of you try to build a $4 billion global company with 35,000 employees. Hell, I bet you punks couldn't run a lemonade stand. Well, if this economy comes crashing down, you had better figure out a way to be productive, and build it back. No video game or whiner's website will help you then. Wah!

Amanda, you've really enlightened me! I will get out of my house right this minute and rent a Hertz car despite the fact that their policy are trying to screw me, that their relationship program is a complete joke and that I get ripped off everytime I rent there....
On a more serious note, I think this website is great, especially if Hertz executives see the problems that we, their clients, are facing. We're in a free economy, i.e. I have the ability to rent somewhere else if I'm unhappy with the products or services of a company, and go to their competitors. This is what America is about despite what you think Amanda. If Hertz has smart executives, they will act on these issues instead of trying to give us lessons.

Anonymous: please enlighten me on how Hertz has "ripped you off", and "screwed you". I'd like to know. Hertz has been rated the #1 RAC company for oh, say 30+ years running. Enterprise, Avis, National, etc., all try to emulate Hertz. I'm sure you realize that, if you have ever actually rented from the other guys. All RAC companies have issues, just like retail companies, gas, airlines, restaurants, etc. Nobody's perfect! Corporations have their ups and downs in doing business. These are very tough times to just keep a business afloat, much more be profitable. I challenge you to tell me that any other RAC company doesn't have their fair share of issues & complaints. I agree that Hertz execs should pay attention to customer complaints, requests, etc. And I'm sure they do. Hertz Customer Service is second to none. I'm willing to bet that Hertz execs want nothing more than to be the ultimate choice for rent a cars for very customer on this planet. But it's just not that simple, or easy. We should all be more patient and understanding with each other and with companies like Hertz. Contrary to paranoid beliefs, they are not trying to "rip you off". They are trying to run a profitable business. And you can't please all of the people, all of the time.

Hi All,

I just rented a car at West 76 in NY and although I always refill the car with gas before returning it, I just saw a charge on my card for an additional 58 dollars. It seems that inexplicably from the moment that I returned my car to the moment it made it to their parking garage, the tank lot some fuel. When I called customer service they said that there was nothing they could do unless I could prove that I had refilled the car before returning it. Thankfully I always keep receipts, so I should be reimbursed shortly

Very frustrated anyway....

Anonymous said...

After looking back over the complaints, I can not see there was a real problem.
Three day wait in Nambia? Crap!! They had better be glad they got any car at all, and not have to run around on the back of a donkey.

Coupons? Crap. Better be glad they even got a car, on the days he/she wanted to reimburse.

Hertz is busy!!!

Twenty-four seven.
What certain individuals dont understand is that it all comes from the top, any decision that is made from the counter, call center,
roadside assistant.
Hertz is pretty hard on its employees to perform, be in attendance, save money, and give excellent customer care.
The employees gripe that they are unfairly treated, but then again, they go against policy, late to work if they come in at all, not doing their job as prescribed. There are some, though who really perform well, and are happy with their jobs. And there are some who have personal issues, that arent addressed well, and they fall by the side of the road. Some times the customer has an issue with one of those people.
All in all Hertz is well organized, and higly maintained.
There again, are issues.
The short lines at some car rentals are there for one reason. Hertz is the number one, and most of the wanted customers are there.
I miss Hertz, as I worked there for many years. I will admit that if there was an issue I had with Hertz, it was my own, not theirs, and I lost, they didnt.
What I would give to be able to say, "Hello, this is Hertz reservations, my name is -----. May I help you?" One more time, with what I had back then.

Hertz is falling apart. The over reactive leaders have no answers. They keep promoting the phony, ass kissing back stabbers, and laying off or demoting the honest, hard workers that actually care about their jobs and company. People that have devoted most of their lives to Hertz for next to nothing pay. It's all part of their "realignment and right-sizing." Fancy words for ass kissing and laying off. And they hire outsider friends of the CEO. None of whom have any rental car experience, kahunas or positive contributions. Just BAD KARMA, and golden parachutes. Same with the execs they have kept around from the old guard. If they were smart, they'd realize that hard ball bully corporate attitude is a thing of the past. Like our lame duck President. They need to realize the past and present, before they can move into the future. Hertz leadership is living in the past. And "in the past" is what they will be, if they don't fix it. Enterprise is on the rise!

I would give them negative stars if it were possible. Let me start by saying that I actually rented our of the Hertz in Harvard Square in Cambridge but I want people to know how HORRIBLE of a company this is- so I am posting to this Hertz post.
We picked up our car and headed to central Mass. to visit my family. That night we went to drive back to our hotel in Worcester. On our way we were pulled over by a Mass. state trooper. He had run our plates and discovered that the Chevy we were driving was registered as a FORD! We explained it was a rental and the cop was very nice but it was illegal to drive the car registered in this way. He called Hertz himself and wrestled with them for 45 minutes while we sat in the car on the side of the highway. We explained to the cop we just wanted to at least get to our hotel so we could check in and be warm. He agreed and escorted us form the highway to our hotel a few miles away. The cop had worked out that the car we rented would be towed away and Hertz was going to deliver a new car to us the very next morning. He also stressed that we should NOT pay for the car rental at all- that this was not an okay practice on the part of a car rental company and they should have been far more responsible with the registration of the car.

So this morning at 7am I get a call form Hertz customer service and they want us to wait 6 and a half hours for a new car to arrive- um hello? I live across the country- I am only in town to visit family for 2 days- that's a quarter of my time here! No- I tell her and fight with her- that's not going to work. She calls me back and says they will have a car here for us in an hour to an hour and a half by 9am latest and guess what? It is now nearly NOON and we are STILL waiting for the replacement car to arrive. I am beyond angry on this one. I say that anyone who ever rents a car AVOID HERTZ at all cost!!!!!!! This isn't even the end of us being stuck in a hotel and having already gone through a lot- Hertz is the most unprofessional idiotic bumbling car rental company I have ever in my life dealt with. Again, I cannot stress enough- please AVOID HERTZ AT ALL COST!!!!!

I did not get a return email to my request to order a car so I did it at the airport. Since I was considered a "walk-in" they charged me $175.00 for one day. I thought it was for a week until I read it the next morning. I told them I was there 7 days. (Kona hawaii). I took it back and complainted. They said they were in the right and that is what happens when you walk in.
I complained to their office and got the same answer. We are right and you are wrong. THey wont get my buisness anymore.

Anonymous said...

My complaint is real simple.

NO car rental company should EVER have a policy where they ask your permission to perform a credit check before renting a car.

No. You can NOT check my credit. I have cash, I have credit (which means someone has already checked my credit prior to issuing the card), and you have cars that you want to rent. I'm not BUYING a car, I'm RENTING a car.

National Car Rental didn't ask for my authorization to run a credit report, and instead, relied on my credit card and drivers license, like rental companies are supposed to do.

And I saved 5 bucks on my 3-day rental.

NEVER AGAIN, Hertz.

Never!

Saw the comments about Hertz at Raleigh/Durhan airport in NC. I had the unfortunate opportunity to work there about 10 years ago....sounds like the dump hasn't changed. It's a corporate-owned location, pays homage to the regional office in Philadephia. A guy by the name of Mr. Happi was the regional big-shot. When he would visit from Philadelphia, women had to show their legs and wear dresses or/skirts...no pants on women at Hertz A sexist asshole prick. The local manager was an idiot by the name of Chancey, don't know if he's still there. He resused to allow lower-level employees to move up to better jobs if they had health issues...a security guard at the gate wanted to drive shuttle buses to the terminals, was diabetic, ol' Chancey said no although by state and federal regulations there was no problem as long as the guard was checked by the doctor. Chancey the prick kept this guy from earning more money. He had the managers in wool pants and wearing ties in the hot summer months cleaning cars, although he let the normal cleaning staff wear T-shirts and shorts. I left after a month, tired of the crap they had staff do. The HR chick left right after me, tells you something that the attrition was high. Fuck Hertz at RDU!

They no longer care about their employees except making them work more hours to compensate for the major reductions in staff. The are raping the company, outsourcing everything, running older vehicles with high mileage.

Just had a shitty experience with Hertz in Portland on SW 4th and Pine this last Monday. Got a rental with only 7/8 fuel. So guess what I returned it with? Exactly what was in it prior. Makes sense right?

So of course, they bill me days later for an extra $17...for fuel. The woman at the local office, Leanne, contradicts everything I say and then has the nerve to say she doesn't have time to help me and that someone else will be calling me. So that guy calls and guess what? He can't help me but does tell me that his manager will be calling me back. Guess who that is? Leanne again!!

So I say screw this run-around I'm calling corporate. So I'm on hold for 30 minutes when finally a lovely (not really) woman named Carla in Oklahoma asks me if I have the receipt still and that I should fax it to them, because they don't believe me. Hell no I won't is what I said.

I proceed to tell her that their service is poor and they need to fix this now. So she says they'll be crediting the $17 back to my card. Damn right you will. It was your mistake to begin with.

Can't wait to tell everyone I know not to spend their money at Hertz, a company who doesn't trust the people who just spent, or wasted rather, their money at such a crappy institution.

I'm not mad at the original mistake, I'm mad at their poor, numerous attempts to "help" me.

I recently experienced poor customer service with Hertz which caused me time lost during my vacation. I was forced to drive in an unsafe vehicle - Hertz Customer Service told me that I had to take the car in myself and get the tire repaired, or, drive far away and get a replacement car. I will never ever, never ever rent from Hertz again and I will tell my corporate manager to change corporate accounts and tell all my friends and colleagues never to rent from Hertz. They do not care about retaining my business and keep me coming back. They also put me in a safety risk which is unconscionable.

The service at the Bloor Street (the Bay Center) Hertz in Toronto is absolutely atrocious. No Gold service exists (like it is supposed to be) renting and dropping off. Likewise, the counter is both unable to produce a receipt on weekends and is completely rude to boot. If you want to avoid unnecessary stress, rent somewhere else. Experience August 2009

I have no issue with Hertz. I have worked for them in the past and found them to be the most ethical company in the industry. Google "*Any Company Name* Sucks" and you'll find the same exact kind of stories. Especially if they are in the customer service sector. Enterprise has an entire website (not just a blog) devoted to them. Doesn't mean that they are any worse than anyone else, just that one particular customer was very dedicated to voicing his opinion. I worked at 4 different Hertz locations in 3 different cities and we were always very ethical and honest. I can't speak for every employee or location, but that has been my personal experience.

I do apologize for any bad experiences that people have had, but they seem mostly like isolated incidents with a co-worker or a specific unethical Hertz employee. I worked for Hertz for 2years, managing 2 locations and then left the company because I needed to relocate. After being gone for 2.5 years, I left the industry that I was in to go back to Hertz. The reason? The industry that I was in made me feel like I was put in situations where I had to lie to my customers. I took a paycut to go back to Hertz. I currently run 2 branches in Illinois, and couldn't be happier. I am genuinely sorry for all the terrible experiences, but these few examples (42 posts out of millions of rentals) are not a true representation of the company I work for.

I will never rent from Hertz again. It was awful. The clerk at the Baltimore Airport was wonderful, polite, and understanding; however, that is where the good part of the experience ended.

Originally I tried to reserve my car online; however, the company's Web site is poorly designed and would not let me schedule my vehicle drop off - as the office on Fort Dix is closed on the weekends.

So I had to picked up my car at the airport. After a small bump (the first car they gave me was dead and it's tags expired) I finally got out of there at 1 a.m.

At 8 a.m. I loaded the car and started my drive towards Fort Dix, N.J., where I was meeting my unit. We are training at Fort Dix before we deploy to Iraq.

Five minutes after I got to Dix I was on a bus and headed to the range. I was on the range until midnight. The next morning (Monday) I took the car back as the office opened and gave the keys to one of the clerks. Two days later I notice that I had been charged a lot more money then I was originally quoted. I go into the office and asked them why.

They said because I kept the keys - they couldn't rent out the car to someone else (remember that their office was closed). I asked to talk to the office manager's manager - our phone conversation was short - he continued to regurgitate the party line and I promptly told him that I was shocked that a company with an office on a military base would treat service members so poorly, I told him I would never use his company again and that I would do everything in my power to ensure that no one else did either.

The thing is they aren't stealing money from me - they are stealing money from the government, from all you taxpayers out there. I get reimbursed for driving here ... by the U.S. Army.

Their customer service is the worst. They do not have the cars promised. They come up with crazy ID rules for corporate discounts. Such as drivers license, corporate credit card, and itenary are insuffient. They wanted a business card as 'proof'. That surely was better than a drivers license? I had to dig one out!!! I was tired! Plus, Because they did not have my class of car they put me in smaller car claiming it was same class. When I own the class I reserved tried to explain you cannot just reclassify cars and expect people to pay an upcharge, their answer was 'its a recession and we are trying to run a business'. My response was you would think you would be trying to keep customers. These clowns have no clue how to keep customers. You cannot just switch and bait customers and lie to their face.

Hertz does switch and bait on jet lagged customers.
You reserve a cheap car, and then they give you an upgrade. You wearily find your way around in a strange airport to a fancier car and assume they upgraded as it is industry standard to do so if they cannot give you what they reserved for you. In our case an automatic transmission.
They simply say "you signed the receipt".
But you cannot trust a conversation/agreement with the employe to be what the put on the receipt- even face to face.
In a jet lagged state, you glance at the bottom line, as the rest of the receipt is in French, and you have not considered it is in Euros not Dollars and you quickly sign it.
I got nothing but superficial corporate pseudo polite emails back. I swear the woman never even read or considered what I wrote.
Cold and Uncaring=Hertz

National Sucks Even More.

If you have any desire to protect your personal privacy, and to do business only with companies that respect you, you will not rent a car from National or their sister company, Alamo. Here's why...

Try dialing any of National Car Rental's toll free reservation numbers (ex. 800-328-1234) from a VOIP line, especially a SKYPE line, and you will get endless ringing. Nobody will answer. Why? Because, as I was told by a National "customer service rep", "National needs your home and cell phone numbers to service you better". Huh? Say what?

The truth is that National wants more detailed customer info so that they can sell it - you are aware that your personal info is worth money, right? - and also, of course, so that you have nowhere to hide from their marketing weasels.

If you call National - Alamo from a SKYPE number, all National captures is the SKYPE termination number, and your privacy is protected...and National apparently doesn't like that.

PS: National/Alamo is owned by Enterprise. Shouldn't be too surprising that they aren't overly concerned with their customers.

I rented a car for one day from the Frisco, Co branch. They charged my credit card for 4 days. $600 too much. When I called to depute the charged the women was very rude, blamed me, and then hung up on me. I even have a receipt that says I only rented the car for one day and that it should cost $200. Now I have to sue them to get my money. I have never had a worse experience with a business in my life.

Hertz is a total mess. There is no coordination between US, France and Spain. Their crappy lemon they rented me broke down broke down and I had to spend two days getting it fixed. Made 20 plus calls to the various departments and countries, got passed back and forth. Ruined our vacation. Didn't even refund all expenses or the rental cost. Hertz Hurts. Spread the word - email your travel departments at work!

They suck. We have an international flight and reserved a car 2 weeks ago. Now they say they have no cars in the area???? The day we are supposed to leave. 30 minutes before we were supposed to pick it up. We confirmed rental the day before. Never did they say that they were short of cars.

WHAT A BUNCH OF WHINNERS! I WORK AT HERTZ AND YES THERE ARE SOME IDIOTS I WORK WITH BUT A CREDIT CARD IS ESSENTIAL AS WELL AS A VALID LIC.. SAY YOU WERE QUOTED $100. FOR THE RENTAL,YOU USE IT AND GET A PARKING TICKET WHILE YOUR USING IT AND RETURN IT AT 2:30 A.M. WITH ONLY HALF A TANK (YOU WERE GIVEN A FULL TANK IN THE BEGINING) WELL THE EXTRA AMOUNT THAT WAS TAKEN OFF OF YOUR ACCOUNT (WHICH IS CALLED AN AUTHORIZATION AMOUNT) WOULD COVER THE TICKET AND GAS. YOU THE RENTER ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT CAR WHEN ITS IN YOUR POSSESION, AND BELIEVE ME MANY CLIENTS THINK THAT SNEAKING A CAR IN AFTER-HOURS CLEARS THEM OF THESE CHARGES. AS FAR AS WINDSHIELD REPLACEMENTS IF A CRACK OR CHIP ON A WINDSHEILD WERE NOT REPLACED WITH A NEW ONE IT COULD AFFECT THE CABIN IN A ROLL-OVER.THINK OF AN EGG SHELL AND HOW HARD IT IS TO BREAK IT WHILE PUSHING ON BOTH ENDS. IF A CHEAP REPAIR WERE DONE THEN WE WOULD BE PUTTING YOUR LIFE AT RISK. YOU MORONS ESP. AMERICANS SHOULD BUY MAPS AND DO A FULL INSPECTION OF YOUR RENTAL BEFORE YOU DRIVE AWAY.ITIOTS!!!

Ripped off by Hertz and charged for car sitting on lot for 3 days.

I recently rented a car from Wichita Falls in North Texas for 3 days. I added the additional insurance on the rental. The rental agent didn’t even look at the vehicle and fill out the inspection service since he stated the insurance would take care of any damage. There was some damage to the left passenger rear quarter panel and the agent said not to worry about it since I had insurance. He didn’t even get up to look at the damage on the car when I mentioned it to him. I got a letter asking if the car was in an accident and I said no. There was already damage to rear quarter panel and the rental agent told me not to be concerned since the insurance covered any damages.

I had problems with the car the next day. The ignition key locked up and I couldn’t start the car even after several tries. Later that Saturday afternoon, the car finally cranked so I drove around a few miles and then home. Sunday morning I had the same problem with starting the car but I was finally able to get it to start. I had a family emergency out of state which was going to be over a week and so I drop the car at the rental location. There was no drop box anywhere since the rental counter was inside another business. I left a letter in the car explaining I was called away out of state on a family emergency and the ignition problem I experienced with the car. Other Hertz locations had stated to leave keys in the glove box or console which I have done before and there was never a problem until now.

3 days later I get a voice mail stating they just noticed the car on the lot. 3 DAYS and the lazy rental agent never got off his butt to check the lot for new cars being dropped off. The agent stated they needed the keys to the car. Is that any way to run a rental car agency? Whoever heard a rental agency not having spare keys for their rental car? Hertz sent me rude letter stating that as the customer I was responsible for the keys and the car and was charged each day until they were able to unlock the car and get keys. I ended up paying over double the amount because they didn’t have spare keys and the agent was too lazy to check inventory and I was made to pay for his poor work ethic and the location didn’t have spare keys.

Hertz doesn’t make allowances for emergency situations or special circumstances. I find Hertz arrogant, rude and irresponsible and not admitting to their mistakes caused by their rental agents and poor customer service. I rented from Hertz for 20 years and never once did I have a problem until now. I have canceled all future Hertz reservations for personal and business use because of their lack luster attitude and they do not want to admit their lazy rental agent didn’t do his job to check the lot daily for rental returns. I WILL NEVER RENT FROM HERTZ EVER AGAIN. The BBB and other state and government agencies should find out why they treat their customers the way they do and their rude attitude when customers send in complaints about the poor service and how they are being taken advantage of circumstances beyond their control. There are thousands of complaints against them and nothing is being done to make them accountable for their action

I prepaid for gas at a discounted rate upon renting the car. However, I was not told about the $30 minimum! I ended up buying 4 gallons of gas for 30 bucks because of their non-disclosure! I complained to corporate and they sent me a credit on a future rental. Gee, thanks. I have no plans to go away and rent a car so it's just going to go to waste and it's non-transferable. Maybe I'll just go rent a car for a day in town ;-) HERTZ - YOU SUCK!!!

I worked for Hertz for about 7 years and they are one really shady company! They were a decent company until a few years ago when they were sold. Even before I left the company I would advise people that care about to NOT rent Hertz. Dangerous cars (rented knowingly), poor customer service, shady billing practices and poor treatment of employees....none of this makes for a good company. If I am not mistaken Hertz gets an "F" from the Better Business Bureau as where I think Avis gets an "A".

I've always liked things like sand clocks, lava lamps, and the like to good of just dish out space staring at it as a configuration of catharsis. In a route, it helps me with meditation, to free emphasis and scarcely assume just about nothing. That's why since I was a kid, in place of of dolls and cars I've perpetually cool more of such pieces like sand clocks, lava lamps, dulcet boxes etc. So I was most enchanted when I found the 2-Laser + LED Light Appear Laser Crown Gyroscope with Music Effects from DealtoWorld.com under the Toys section. It's like a harmonious belt, a spinning exceed, and a berate show all rolled into one. Which is great amusement! The gyroscope transfer outing object of in the air a minute. The laser enlightenment display with accompanying music makes this gyroscope a rather incomparable bauble that my friends get also been most amused with.

My dogs are also nice-looking intrusive around the laser gyroscope I got from DealtoWorld.com. They each cleave to the gyroscope as it spins, although at principal they kept barking at the laser slight boast, and also because it produces music. But after they got employed it, they've stopped barking but due keep following the gyroscope whenever I start spinning it. Kids are also bonny amused by it. On occasion it's meet to have pleasing toys throughout the ancestry so that you can pull out the small on while the kids are being amused or playing with it while you go prepare scoff or fall heir to changed. The gyroscope is inseparable such play with with this purpose.

The gyroscope I bought from DealtoWorld.com has a dragon as a intent plot on it, and produces a gegenschein indicate with red, downcast, and unskilled colours. Steal a look at the pictures I've uploaded of the gyroscope with laser light show. The music produced from the gyroscope is not that great but allowable plenty to consider any chic customer to the house. The gyroscope is red and black, making it look exceedingly coolth, and measure masculine with that dragon imprint.

The music light show gyroscope runs on 6 LR44 batteries, which are replaceable anyway. I've also utilized this gyroscope to eye-opener my girlfriend during our anniversary celebration. I did the cheesy terror of decorating the hotel cell with roses and when I led her in, I started up the gyroscope as well so that the laser brighten clarify produces a fresh effect. I also had some battery operated candles so all the light effects created a slightly romanticist atmosphere. She loved it, past the going, to my relief. I also bought the candles from DealtoWorld.com. These days it seems to be my non-fulfilment shopping put in return all gifts and ideas in support of romanticist occasions.

Since Christmas is coming, this laser radiance make clear gyroscope can dialect mayhap be a momentous Christmas favour seeking the toddler or neutral the favoured! Alternatively, the gyroscope can absolutely be a kindly summation to the established Christmas decorations. I can imagine placing it within a mile of the Christmas tree and maybe spinning it when guests hit town in the house. Looks like DealtoWorld.com is getting my subject anyway again!

I just tried to setup an online account on their website and (after putting in all the required information) their site won't let me login. Got onto an online chat with their support staff, answered a bunch of questions, and got an offer to register via U.S. Mail.

"Hey Hertz, you're fired!"

F'in a-holes. Not even an "email us" link on their website. OK, my next stop is my corporate travel profile. I'm removing them from my profile, changing my upcoming trip to Avis, AND encouraging all of my colleagues to do the same.

How's that now Hertz? Happy? Dumbfvcks...

Hertz is horrible. They are constantly disappointing, and I am finally given up. As a platinum spg and a 100 flts a year southwest flyer, Hertz is by far the worst frequent travel / rental program. As someone who has rented 30 times in the last 6 months of 2010, I cannot get an upgrade, or any type of recognition besides the lame bypass the rental counter. You cant even find the name of a person who works there to email.

AWFUL OVERPRICED AND HORRIBLE SERVICE!!!!

Cris said...

When you type "Hertz sucks" in Google and the first link that comes up is a blog called 'hertzsux'... that's gotta tell you something.

I can't even count the ways Hertz sucks. HORRIBLE website? Check. Complete idiots working for them in almost every part of the organization? Check. AWFUL customer service? They got that too.

My favorite [recent] story: I had reserved a car to be picked up in Roanoke, VA and dropped off in Blacksburg, VA. My flight got diverted to Greensboro, NC. I decided to drive from Greensboro, rather than get bussed up to Roanoke, only to backtrack to Blacksburg...

So I explain my situation to the jackass at the Hertz Gold counter and said "I want to use my awards points to pay for the rental". Apparently Hertz doesn't have the technology to access my awards account balance at the actual rental counters. Seriously?!?!?!? It's called the Internet a**holes. Oh, right, it's private information and they can't trust the jackasses who work at the counters with that type of critical information... Whatever, I decide to just pay for it. That's not even the annoying part.

Before I even go to the counter, I fire up my laptop to check the price on a one-way rental from Greensboro to Blacksburg for a regular mid-size. The Hertz site said something like $120, I can't remember exactly. So at the counter, after I say 'screw it, I'll pay for it', the jackass quotes me a price of $140+... and sticks to his story after I show him the lower quote on my laptop screen which was propped up on the counter by this point.

The best part of the story is after I email those jerkwads in customer service explaining the whole ordeal, I get this [s***canned] response back:

"Thank you for taking the time to contact us.

We sincerely regret your rental experience with Hertz did not meet with the high standards of service we strive to maintain. As a service oriented company, we rely on customer feedback to help us maintain and improve our service performance standards. The information you have provided is very important to us, since it tells us how our various locations are doing and where improvements are needed. Please be assured your comments will be shared with the appropriate Hertz management.

Hertz provides rates based on several factors. This includes where and when you rent, the type of vehicle, and whether you receive a discount or special rate through your affiliation with a company or organization. Also, Hertz utilizes a "Yield Management" system similar to hotels and airlines, where rates are assigned based on supply and demand. Generally speaking, the earlier you book your reservation, the lower the rates will be. When a customer arrives at the rental counter without a reservation,
the rates are typically higher than rates booked in advanced. We regret our representative was unable to assist you in booking a reservation using your Hertz #1 Awards points. Unfortunately, our counter representatives do not have access to the private information required in order to process this type of reservation.

Thank you again for contacting us. We appreciate your business and look forward to the opportunity to serve your future car rental needs.

Thanks Hertz, I know what Yield Management is. I would also say that management at Hertz is yielding more idiots than any other organization in the history of life on earth.

If we're lucky they go the way of Circuit City.

Another gem of incredibly bad customer service from Hertz. This from yesterday (1/25/11), I write to Hertz:

"I'm trying to make a reservation and redeem my award points for the
reservation. There used to be a "redeem and reserve" option/button, but I can't find it anymore. It appears you've made your already HORRIBLE website even worse. Congratulations on finding a way to out-do yourselves in surpassing rock-bottom.

I need a car from 3/9 to 3/13 and want to use up points. How do I make that happen?"

Hertz' response:

"Thank you for your interest in the Hertz #1 Awards Program. We are sorry that this program does not meet your expectations, but unfortunately, it is difficult to design a single program that appeals to all customers. I have forwarded your comments to our Corporate office as they like receiving comments on how to improve the #1 Awards program.

I worked for Hertz for 10yr's 7 as a Branch Mgr. The way Hertz treats there employees is blatantly abusing My new area Mgr literally told me he was going to f***king kill me! I reported it right away to the head of HR, and filed a police report. After not hearing anything from anyone in Hertz for almost 3 days they finally came to my office to tell me that he admitted to making the threat, and that he was stressed! But that I would have to continue working under him. I had to retain an attorney to get him removed as my direct report. Hertz was not happy about that, and proceeded to harass me for 7 months for poor job performance, and eventually fired me for a trumped up customer complaint..(which they never could prove)This is by far the worst, and most bizarre Co. to ever have existed.

I will never rent from Hertz again either. I have never rented a car before and I am young. Boy was I taken advantage of. First the salesman at the Ft. Lauderdale airport convinced me that I should buy their full protection insurance despite me telling him I had excellent geicko insurance. This was almost 30 dollars a day. Later in the day I called my car insurance company who told me I absolutely didn't need the extra Hertz insurance. When I called Hertz to try and cancel their insurance I was told I would have to go back to the specific Hertz location I picked the car up from. When I went back they revealed that I actually couldn't cancel my insurance. Instead they could have me return my car and take out a new car. This of course would end up costing me more money than what the actual insurance costed since I had gotten a deal on the car through expedia. Also I purchased the Fuel option where you pay for a tank of gas before hand. I didn't realize, nor did the salesman tell me that if you don't use the whole tank you don't get your money back. What kind of bullshit is that??? And finally, I left my keys in the car by accident and locked the door. When I called them they said it would be over 70 dollars to send someone and open the door and if the keys were in the truck it would be $200!!!! Thank god I have AAA and they did it for free. Lesson well learned!! I was naive and stupid for not doing my homework before renting but I will never rent a car from Hertz again!!

Hertz rents unsafe vehicles. I rented a minivan from hertz in Tilghman Street Allentown Pa. The right front break was warped so bad that the van would shake badly at interstate speed when trying to stop. We drove to Colorado. When we needed to use the windshield wipers, the drivers side wiper was useless. When we stopped to check the wiper the part of the wiper that contacts the windshield was missing. I called the 800 number, was told to replace the wiper and I would be reimbursed. I did exchange the Van In Boulder Co, and was treated very good there and would rent form that location. But as for Allentown. I had to fight to get my money for the wiper, and the manager did not called back. They did give me credit vouchers, woop de freeking doo !!! Like I want to rent from Hertz Allentown again. I have rented from Dolar in the past and would recommend them above Hertz.

I HAVE WORKED FOR HERTZ FOR OVER 20 YEARS NOW. I HAVE READ ALL THE GREAT COMMENTS. HEY! NOW LETS LOOK AT THE CUSTOMERS. WHAT COLOR IS THE CAR. I CANT DRIVE A CAR WITHOUT NEVERLOST IM A MORON. WHAT DO YOU MEAN I HAVE TO WAIT A FEW MINUTES FOR CAR AFTER SEEING THAT 100 CARS JUST WENT OUT IN ABOUT 30 MINUTES. I JUST BOOKED A CAR ON PRICLINE FOR $10.00 ARE THERE ANY FREE UPGRADES. HOW ABOUT THE CUSTOMERS THAT FIGHT IN LINE. THATS ALWAYS FUN TO WATCH! OR ABOUT THE CUSTOMERS THAT THINK THEY DONT HAVE TO HAVE MONEY ON THEIR CREDIT CARDS.OR VAILD DRIVERS LICENSE TO RENT A CAR REALLY! SHUT UP! YOUR THE REAL IDIOTS.

Scott said...

Hertz definitely receives a lot of complaints. At first I assumed it was because they were the biggest company out there, but after reading some of the stories I've seen they certainly have some shady practices going on.

I've created a site dedicated to finding out which rental car companies are the worst to deal with, if you have a few spare moments we'd love to get your vote.

hertz does suck if you think you can work there until you get ready to retire think again after 27 years they told me to go home and if you get a magor illness its good buy after you return to work dont trust hertz for anything they lie to every day

Anonymous said...

This is to Amanda Reckonwith. Hertz hasnt been number one in many years Enterprise has out sold Hertz by a ton, and have 70+% of the insurance replacement rentals in the US. I know I work for Hertz 14+ years. and everyone is correct it does suck to work here. You get no respect and no recognition for working hard.

Anonymous said...

Also everyone I know that works here at hertz or has worked here hates/hated it. It's not the work that sucks its the people. It's a war zone and no one can be trusted. There is no honor or loyalty to long term employees and noones job is safe. It starts at the top and rolls down to the bottom of the ladder. Employees don't care because management doesn't care. Employees act that way because they have all been treated like trash. What goes around comes around.

Anonymous said...

In my opinion Hertz is the poorest ran rental car company out there. Their management decisions are based on nepotism, political views, friendships, and basically the wrong reasons.

They treat their customers very poorly and make decisions based on only their share holders, not the years and loyalty spent with the company.

Employees who make the company money are allowed to do whatever they want with no accountability whatsoever. The managers are chosen based on how good at kissing up they are or having similar personality traits as their superiors.

Anonymous said...

Working at Hertz is like playing a game of Survivor. Who can outwit, outplay, and outlast the competition. There is no loyalty between managers, employees, and upper management. The employees will say one thing to your face and blind side you the next. People who you think you can trust, you cannot. No matter how good of people they pretend to be.

Anonymous said...

Hey, I have worked at Hertz for 20 years all in capital letters. You have no idea what you are talking about. You are speaking about a very small percentage of customers who that in during your 20 years, you have no idea how to handle. It is your job to deal with these things, every company has them. Take the time to look at what they have to deal with. Employees who hide in the back so that they don't have to help people or pretend to be working on their computer with no one there. They are dealing with a group of employees who don't know how to function without their cell phone and will text and take calls at the counter as a priority over helping people. Employees who take 1 hour to 1 1/2 hour lunches, employees who don't want to ask questions as to why they really need that car. You need to go back and look at your training. I know that Hertz doesn't care about customer service any more and you are a prime example of that. Hertz loves to get rid of those 20+ year employees to save money are your time is coming my friend, especially with your attitude.

Hertz SUCKS. Their website prices and local establishment prices vary. At first I thought a few dollars wouldn't hurt, but when I called the VA military highway branch to set an appointment, they wanted to charge an extra $15 a day compared to the website listing. When I used Enterprise, their website and local location prices were consistent. Their initial estimate was what I paided for at the location.

Never work for Hertz!! Mr. Cornhole at PDX is the BIGGEST asshole one could meet!! Stay away from this company as a employee or customer.

Anonymous said...

Do not do business with Hertz. I have done business with Hertz in the past at other locations and have been satisfied, but whoever is running the Riverside, CA branch is a complete and total moron, a person who has zero understanding of what customer service should be. This branch has left me stranded multiple times, failed to deliver cars that were promised and flat out lied to me. I can Honestly say that this is the worst business I have ever dealt with. If you don't like dealing with incompetent people, I would recommend trying the local Enterprise branch at 951/710-5125. They are located on Van Buren. I have been doing business with them for years and they have never let me down.

Until this week, it has been 10 years since I used Hertz & I will endeavor NEVER to use them again!

1. Hertz 1 Club reservation with all selections and options made (including credit card number) online. That was fine; except, when I arrived at the airport, it was as though I had done nothing. Same questions, etc.

2. Returned to find that an additional $200.00 dollars was pending on my credit card from Hertz which would have been OK (It is SOP for them to hold your deposit for 72 hours); however, I was not told of this.

3. When I called to have the simple explanation, I was on hold for 20 minutes!

Anonymous said...

I tried to make a 10-day car reservation today.
Issue #1: When I came to the end of the process and submitted my reservation, an error message popped up telling me I needed a FAX number!!! Are they kidding?? It's 2012 ... a Fax? Really?
Issue #2: The taxes & fees weren't added until the very end (5 pages or so later). Most successful online retailers understand you'll have to do it as early as possible.
Issue #3: Since my reservation wasn't accepted without a fax number, I figured there must be a live chat option to have them resolve the issue. Not immediately visible (although I found it later in a total different part of the site, not at the checkout page)
Issue #3: I found a phone number (also in another part of the site). When I tell them about the fax problem, they just say it's not legal over e-mail. huh?? Then they tell me it's a coupon they have to fax me, and I tell them to e-mail it to me. It's not possible, they say.
Issue #4: I find the online chat function. A friendly person helps me and says, oh just use the following number for Fax number. For all I know he/she is giving me their home fax number to which a fax will be sent with my credit card details on it ... so I decide not to do it.
Issue #4: I'm looking for a customer service e-mail form/address so I can help them increase business by giving them some free advice on how to help streamline their processes (some as simple and cheap as removing the stupid Fax requirement). No such form is available ....

RESULT #1: I ended up renting a car from Avis for $200 more but with a process that was seamless, easy, and generated trust.
RESULT #2: Since I wanted to voice my frustration, I ended up here for all so see, rather than just Hertz customer service.
RESULT #3: Through my credit card, I'm a Hertz Gold Club Member. If they treat their "Gold status" members that way ... I don't dare thinking how everyone else is treated.
RESULT #4: I teach business in an Ivy league business school. I'm using Hertz from now on as an example of how NOT to run a business.

Anonymous said...

Forgot in my former post ....
ISSUE #5: I ended up calling the airport in Europe thinking I might get better service having the station manager making the reservation for me. He tells me he cannot make reservation but will connect me to reservations ... as soon as he tries to connect me, my phone call gets dropped!

Unknown said...

HUrtz sucks!!!! i made a reservation a week before my parents came to visit all the way from florida i get the the corporate store an they tell me there is no reservation an thats all they can do!!! Then the ladie questions me even making a reservation! Like im stupid or something then says she cant help us without a confirmation number, wich i later found but was not good any more scence my parents had already left to go home. They are really bad customer service an keeping track of there reservations on line i would not recommend them at all! My father also works for a company that uses there services everyday in florida he will be sure to report this to his company!!!

AWFUL Crooks. Terrible Service. Rude Managers. I will never pay them another dime to be treated like this.

My car was totaled and I rented a car from the Hertz in Silver Spring Md. It has been the worst customer service I have ever encountered in my life and I work in the service industry. They told me they would contact the insurance provider responsible for paying the cost of my rental car, so I think everything is fine and I go about my day-to-day business with my rental car. I finally return the rental car and they tell me that the insurance provider only authorized the rental car for one week. I have had the car for about 5 weeks or so. Not once did anyone from Hertz call me to let me know that this was the situation. They went ahead and charged my credit card the $800.00 without my permission. I went back in to get a receipt from them to give to my lawyer and they couldn't provide me with a receipt. Really???? HMMMM. They wanted a claim number in order to provide me with a receipt which I didn't have on me at the time. What would having a claim number matter when Im the one that ended up paying the bill and not the insurance company of the guy that totaled my car. Anyhow, I go home and find my claim number and I call them the following day. The guy on the phone tells me that he will print up my receipt and call me after its printed. Let's see, that was around 11:30 am and now its 10:45 pm. The worst customer service on the planet! I will see to it that everyone I know will cross the street and give Enterprise their business and not Hertz. Im glad I have a lawyer.

SO, has Hertz improved since May 2006? I can tell you that their website hasn't. I coulnd't find an 800 to inquire about their BAIT & SWITCH, alledgedly breaking a federal law (is any Corp. EVER??? prosecuted for this??). Fed up with searching, but wanting to force them to honor their HUGE advertisement on several parts of the website (ironic choice of words for their lack of integrity, right?) I pursued it by Googling HERTZ Phone Number - BTW, it's 800-654-3131
Have to get back to them now, just wanted to report this. But crap!, if they're still as bad as all of the comments I read here, for get the pick up service (can you believe in NYC they close at an EARLY 6:00PM on weekdays and 8:00PM weekends.
ALSO, the Promo & Discount codes I found on various sites on the net didn't work. Some in fact INCREASED the rate, by a lot, like $10 - $25 PER DAY. That's why I ALWAYS check multiple sites, multiple codes, etc. Time I have, money not so much; I'm def not part of the 1% elite, but then they don't rent and their garages are open 24/7 for their Beemers.

Anonymous said...

After reading so many comments, I have to leave some suggestions; I hope some of you come back to read them. I'm not seeing a date stamp other than May 2006 on the original post, so your Posts might be very old.
@ Management Trainee: Suggestion: Ask those customers with the kind words to drop a note of appreciation to HR naming you, also a copy to you if they wouldn't mind. Some just might and it could help a LOT, esp in your job search. If you get them, show them to prospective employers, even at the time you apply - don't wait for the interview. ALSO, start keeping a tally of comments so that you can mention that in interviews or even on Applications: For example: receive an average of 10 pronounced comments per day (or week or whatever the figure it is). IF you have numbers of how many customers you serve per day - via phone, in-person, etc., make that number into a percentage: e.g., "An average of 65% of my customers make explicit positive comments on my performance (attitude, etc, what ever aspects of your work customers mention to you). Many people say "thank You" but not as many make more explicit comments, so probably even a 25% is a strong figure - be sure to emphasise that your figures represent more than a standard "Thank You."
Employers LOVE statistics, espcially percentages - this will make you stand out in their memory AND will impress them that you go that extra mile to keep such records of your performance.

@ LISA - I hope you disputed your charges to your credit card, stating it was the advice of the Police Officer. You found at gem with that Officer - I'd guess many woulnd't have taken the time to make that call, esp 45 mins, and to escort you to your hotel.
As close as Hertz is to my bldg, forget it, I'm not renting from them.

@ Anon re: running a Credit Check: That would have a negative impact on your credit rating. Think what they're doing to people, esp frequent customers with doing that. Unless something rang an Alert when they entered your card number, there was no reason for them to do that. I've rented for decades and NEVER had that happen.

GOOD Rental Companies: Yes!, NATIONAL, ALAMO, Enterprise, Dollar - All very good. Also ACE (which seems relatively new to the Biz).

ACE Car Rental near the Indianapolis Airport is EXCELLENT !!! GREAT RATES, GREAT employees and Cust Service. I thought they were independent but seem to be in other locations now and on popular travel search engines. They are located just a bit outside the airport, but they QUICKLY come to get you when calling from a Service Phone near baggage claim; they get you to the to your gate quickly for your return flight, and in fact, getting In & Out of their location is VERY easy, I think even easier than the other vendors around their. I can't praise them enough, they are EXCELLENT! I haven't been there in about 4 or 5 yrs (prob since 2006 or '07) because I've not been flying there much, but I can't imagine that their kindness & great service has changed; they were WITHOUT FAIL, ALWAYS EXCELLENT, courteous, helpful, ect., etc., etc. They are exactly what ALL companies should be like. I got bumped up to an HHM (from an economy) a few times and discovered a great vehicle that had great gas mileage (29 city/ 34 Hwy), was an excellent ride, very comfortable for my elderly mom & her 99 yr-old cousin, even though I'm tall and the window shield seemd a bit low, I LOVE that vehicle and will buy one when I have to get one, all due to ACE Car Rental.

Have to give credit where credit is due. In spite of reading these horror stories, a Hertz was close-by, best rate by $30-40/ day for a short notice need. I took a chance. The person who noted the gas level needs to learn their fractions better (they stated on the contract it was 7/8 full, but it was at least 1/16th less than that, almost down to 3/4.
HOWEVER, they were nice and friendly, the vehicle hadn't been driven much, they had the vehicle size I had reserved, and the the Cust. Service upon return was VERY GOOD - warm friendly, huge smiles and courteous. I complimented them and mentioned I had read horror stories on Hertz but took a chance and was very pleased. With a big, genuine smile the lady & gentleman assisting me thanked me for telling them, said they were very glad to hear that I gave them a chance, and gave me a coupon for a discount on future rental.
So I'm glad to report that as of Aug 29, 2012 the Hertz at 906 Union St, Brooklyn, NY meet the standards of good service. So if you're in that area & in need of a vehicle, check them out, at least walk in ahead of time to speak with them and see what you think. I'm glad my "desperate, last minute gamble" found good results. Maybe other Hertz offices will try to step up to the plate and meet the quality standards that their Brooklyn colleagues provide. GO Brooklyn!!!

I just got done working with Hertz (Got offered a better job from an auditing firm. Better pay). I would have to agree with a lot of what people are saying on this blog, but at the same time, Hertz really isn't all that bad.

The people that work there are really nice and try to support you through everything you're doing. My Store Manager was a fucking boss. She always made sure the employees took lunch and was more than willing to give us vacation days when we needed it. The problem I really have was the corporate structure.

I worked there for 7 months and didn't see a bonus, and got two letters threatening my job because I wasn't selling enough insurance. Yet, my manager and I were the only ones working there for 12 hours a day 6 days a week at the third largest revenue location in our area. It was exhausting. Sure I was making a lot of money in overtime, but I didn't have a life and was loosing touch with my friends and family.

The only thing I would say about this blog is that, yes, Hertz can be kind of annoying when it comes to rentals because their policies and corporate structure is fucked up. But please be kind to the employees there. More than likely they have been working 12 hour days and are exhausted from hearing every kind of complaint imaginable. They're really nice people just trying to make a living like the rest of us, so just try to give a little bit of respect!!!
